40-baht day fare on the Red and Purple Lines may run to the end of 2027

The 40-baht daily cap on the SRT Red and Light Red Lines and the MRTA Purple Line started on 1 December 2025 for 12 months and is due to end on 30 November 2026. On 25 October 2026 a government spokeswoman said the Transport Ministry has agreed to keep it until the end of 2027, but the extension still needs cabinet approval and no meeting date has been given.

The cap only works if you tap in with a contactless Visa or Mastercard, or a Mangmoom card. You pay the normal fare per ride and the difference above 40 baht for the day is refunded to the card afterwards.

Ridership rose sharply under the cap: by the end of August 2026 the Red and Light Red Lines carried 9,460 passengers a day (up 89%) and the Purple Line 27,653 (up 135%).
