Bangkok Nightlife
Where to go out in Bangkok, area by area — with live, top-rated picks from our nightlife and rooftop bar listings, and the rules that actually changed in 2025–26.
The 2026 rules in 20 seconds
- Drinking age 20; clubs and rooftops check ID.
- Bars close at 2am — except the three official 4am zones: Silom–Patpong, RCA and Ratchadaphisek.
- The old 2pm–5pm shop-sales alcohol ban is gone (scrapped permanently in May 2026) — retail sales now run 11am–midnight, with dry days on some Buddhist holidays and election days.
Choose your scene
Thonglor & Ekkamai
Bangkok's polished side: listening bars, natural-wine rooms, izakayas and some of Asia's best cocktail bars. Dress up a little; the crowd is local, fashionable and older than Khao San's.
- BECKA BAR · ★ 5.0 · ฿1–800
- Destination RoofTop Bar · ★ 4.9 · ฿200–1,400
- Cul de Sac - Thonglor Rooftop Bar · ★ 4.9
Khao San Road
The backpacker street party — buckets, competing sound systems, street pad thai at 1am. Loud, cheap and chaotic, and increasingly full of young Thais partying alongside the tourists. Closes at 2am, not 4.
- XongSilp · ★ 4.8
- Platinum Lounge # Central Pinklao · ★ 4.7
- Ecstacy Bruhh · ★ 4.0
Silom & Patpong
Two scenes on one grid: the city's main LGBTQ+ strip on Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4, and Patpong's go-go bars and night market. One of Bangkok's three official 4am zones, with big-name rooftops on top.
- Spire Rooftop Bar Bangkok · ★ 4.6 · ฿400–1,600
- Sky Bar at Lebua · ★ 4.3 · ฿฿฿฿
Sukhumvit
The long spine that has a bit of everything — craft-beer bars, jazz rooms, clubs and the highest density of rooftops in the city, all hanging off the BTS line.
- THE YANG'S CLUB 94 · ★ 5.0 · ฿800–1,000
- Dhamaal Nightclub · ★ 5.0
- Amnesia · ★ 4.8 · ฿400–600
Clubbing specifically? RCA (Royal City Avenue) is the purpose-built club strip with a university-age crowd and 4am closing — it sits off New Phetchaburi Road, a short Grab from Sukhumvit.
Rooftop bars: the one Bangkok cliché worth doing
Bangkok has more serious rooftop bars than any city in Asia, from the postcard giants to neighbourhood 8th-floor terraces at a third of the price. Sunset slots (roughly 6–7pm) are the ones worth booking ahead; after 9pm you can usually walk in anywhere outside the top tier.
Dress code is the thing that catches people out: no shorts, no flip-flops, no sleeveless shirts at the high-end places. Keep one smart-casual outfit in the suitcase for this. Browse all rooftop bars in the directory with prices and ratings.
Night-out common sense
- Agree prices upfront in Patpong-style venues — the inflated-bar-bill routine is one of the city's oldest hustles. If a bill looks invented, stay calm and ask for the tourist police (1155). More patterns on our scams page.
- Watch your drink and split taxis with people you trust — standard big-city rules apply in a city this easy-going.
- Getting home: the BTS stops around midnight; after that it's Grab, Bolt or metered taxis. Fares surge at 2am closing — walking one soi away from the venue cluster gets you a cheaper, faster pickup.
- Cannabis is not a free-for-all anymore — smoking in public carries fines, and the rules tightened again in 2025–26. See the current cannabis rules.
Frequently asked questions
What time do bars close in Bangkok?
Most bars and clubs close at 2am. Three designated Bangkok zones may stay open until 4am under the entertainment-zone rules in force since late 2023: Silom–Patpong, RCA (Royal City Avenue) and Ratchadaphisek Road. Khao San Road and Thonglor are not on the official 4am list, whatever the party promoters say. A nationwide 4am extension has been proposed but not enacted.
What is the drinking age in Thailand?
20 years old, for Thais and foreigners alike. Proper clubs, hotel bars and rooftops in tourist areas do check ID — carry a photo of your passport at minimum. Street stalls rarely check, but the law is the same.
Can you buy alcohol in the afternoon in Thailand?
Yes — this changed recently. The old 2pm–5pm retail sales ban was suspended in December 2025 and permanently scrapped in May 2026. Shops and convenience stores now sell alcohol continuously from 11am to midnight. Sales bans still apply on certain Buddhist holidays and election days.
What should I wear to a Bangkok rooftop bar?
Smart casual at the high-end sky bars: no shorts, no flip-flops, no tank tops — a collared shirt and closed shoes is the safe default for men. Mid-tier rooftops are more relaxed, especially before 8pm, but rubber sandals and beachwear get turned away almost everywhere.
Which Bangkok area has the best nightlife?
Depends what you want: Thonglor/Ekkamai for polished cocktail bars and the local-fashionable crowd, Khao San Road for the cheap backpacker street party, RCA for actual clubbing until 4am, and Silom for the city's main LGBTQ+ strip (Soi 2 and Soi 4) alongside Patpong's neon. Sukhumvit's sois cover everything in between.
