Why this page exists
Between 1 August and 6 September 2026 we archived 52 threads across r/Thailand, r/Bangkok and r/ThailandTourism whose titles ask about loneliness, meeting people or travelling alone — 758 comments between them. The two biggest were somebody whose Bangkok meetup group nobody turned up to (188 replies) and somebody asking what to do about the fear of spending a whole solo trip bored (145 replies).
Both have the same practical answer, and it is not "be more outgoing": go to a thing that was already going to happen. The list below is every Bangkok social we could verify runs on a fixed weekday at a fixed address, so you can pick tonight rather than hope.

13 of 27 sit in Sukhumvit, and one train line strings most of the rest together: Asok, Phrom Phong, Ekkamai, Bang Chak, Punnawithi and Udom Suk are all stations on the BTS Sukhumvit line. Booking in the Old City instead buys you the temples and costs you the evenings — commuters in our getting-around guide clock Sukhumvit to Chinatown at roughly 40 minutes by BTS and MRT, each way.

Eating alone
Bangkok is one of the easier cities in the world to eat alone in, for a structural reason: most of the food is sold by single-dish stalls with stools, not by restaurants with two-tops. Ordering one plate of pad kra pao and eating it at a plastic table takes four minutes and attracts no attention at all.
The two formats built for one person are the street stall and the mall food court, where you buy a card at the counter, pay at each stand and sit wherever there is space. Shared-plate Thai restaurants are the awkward case — a whole fish and three curries is a group order — so save those for a night you go with people you met at one of the events above. Doing Bangkok alone, by time of day
- Early morning (06:00–09:00): parks before the heat. Two of the running groups above meet at Lumphini and Benjakitti, and both parks fill with people exercising alone anyway, so joining or not joining is equally normal. Temples open around 08:00 and are close to empty for the first hour.
- Midday (11:00–15:00): the hours you plan around rather than through. An hour of Thai massage is the standard solo move — neighbourhood shops charge roughly ฿250–400 for 60 minutes, less than a mall lunch. The massage guide covers what the price tiers actually buy.
- Afternoon (15:00–18:00): a full day out of the city is easier alone than with a group, because you leave when you like. Ayutthaya is ฿15–20 each way on the 3rd-class train, and the Maeklong railway market runs on the local line out of Wongwian Yai — the day-trips guide has fares and departure points. If you would rather stay put, the itinerary planner builds a walkable day.
- Evening (18:00 onwards): this is what the event list above is for. If you would rather not talk to anyone, a rooftop bar at sunset is the one Bangkok cliché that works perfectly alone — the nightlife guide has the areas, the dress codes and which zones close at 2am rather than 4am.
The bits solo travel changes
Travelling alone does not change Bangkok's risk profile much — the roads are still the thing that hurts visitors, and the scams are the same ones. What it changes is that nobody notices if you drop off the map. Two habits cover almost all of it: tell someone which event you are going to and when you expect to be back, and book the ride home through an app so there is a record of the trip.

If it gets lonely anyway
It does, for most people, usually around day four. The version of this that helps is concrete: pick one event from tonight's list and commit to staying 45 minutes, which is long enough for the second conversation and short enough that a bad one costs you nothing. The quizzes and games nights are easier than the bars for this, because there is a task in the room and you are not required to be interesting.
If nothing is on tonight, the daytime substitutes are a group activity with a structure — a cooking class, a Muay Thai session, a park run — rather than a solo sight. Booking one for tomorrow morning is itself the fix, because the worst version of this is an empty day with nothing already scheduled in it.
If it is heavier than boredom, we would rather say what we do not have than print a number we could not check: we have no verified English-language crisis line for Thailand on file — your embassy's consular section is the reliable first call, and your travel-insurance policy usually includes a 24-hour assistance line. Do Bangkok meetups actually have anyone at them?
Not always — the most-replied Bangkok thread in our August 2026 Reddit archive was somebody whose meetup group nobody showed up to, with 188 comments. The pattern that avoids it: pick events the venue itself hosts rather than ones a single organiser convenes. A quiz night, a booked comedy line-up or a games bar charging an entry fee runs whether or not the group chat does, because the venue has already staffed for it. Of the 27 events here, the ones tied to a named venue and a published weekly slot are the safer first bet.
What does it cost to go to a Bangkok meetup?
17 of the 27 events here have no fee at the door, though several of those ask for a one-drink minimum or a spend of ฿80–120 at the venue. Of the 10 that charge, the cheapest is ฿40 (the Sunday language exchange in Sathorn) and the most expensive is ฿600 (a 90-minute Muay Thai drop-in class, prepaid). Where should a solo traveller stay in Bangkok?
Near the events, not near the sights — Bangkok traffic decides whether you actually go out. 13 of the 27 recurring socials are in Sukhumvit and 8 districts have at least one, but only 1 is in the Old City, where most first-time visitors book. Commuters in our getting-around guide clock Sukhumvit to Chinatown at roughly 40 minutes by BTS and MRT, so a temple-side room costs you most of an evening each way. We do not yet track a single hostel in the directory, so this page names districts rather than dorm beds.
What is there to do alone in Bangkok during the day?
Eating is the easy part: street stalls and food courts are built for single diners, and a solo bowl of boat noodles is unremarkable rather than conspicuous. Beyond that, a Thai massage (60 minutes, ฿250–400 at neighbourhood shops), a temple circuit in the Old City, and Chatuchak on a Saturday all work better alone than in a group, because nobody is waiting on you. A day trip needs no group either: the 3rd-class train to Ayutthaya is ฿15–20 each way and takes 1h15–2h.
Is Bangkok safe for solo travellers?
Thailand sits at Level 1 on the US advisory scale — the lowest tier — and violent crime against visitors is rare; the risks that actually reach solo travellers are roads, inflated bar bills and unmetered taxis. The one thing solo travel changes is that nobody notices if you go quiet, so tell someone which event you are at and how you are getting back. What we left out, and why
- Bangkok Hash House Harriers. The club's domain is a parked for-sale page, so no current run schedule could be read off a first-party source.
- adidas Runners Bangkok. No published weekly session schedule with a time and a meeting point.
- Hostel bar crawls. Several Bangkok hostels run them; none we checked publishes a fixed weekday, so there is nothing to list beyond "ask at reception".
- Volunteering. The Bangkok volunteer groups we found post one-off dates — canal cleanups, festival kitchens — rather than a weekly slot, so they belong on the events calendar instead — or in this weekend in Bangkok, which compiles the dated ones inside a Friday-to-Sunday window.
- One language-exchange group with weekly Sunday sessions. Its own listing says the venue is still to be decided, so there is no address to print.
