3 ways to make this trip, from ฿15 one way, and 1h–1h30 on the quickest, direct. Below: what each costs, who runs it, how often it goes and the pier or station it actually leaves from.

Fares checked 7 September 2026 and quoted as one-way bands per adult. They move with season, fuel and demand — the flight bands move fastest of all.

Booking notes

Minivan · 1h–1h30 · ฿60–฿100

Faster than the ordinary train and about four times the price, which on this leg still means under ฿100. Luggage space is the trade — a full-size case is a problem.

Day train · 1h15–2h · ฿15–฿20

Third class, fans not air-conditioning, no reservation — walk up and buy a ticket. Some Ayutthaya services still leave from the old Hua Lamphong station rather than Krung Thep Aphiwat, so read the station on the ticket.

Bus + Bus · 12h35–18h20 · ฿680–฿1,350

Bangkok → Sukhothai: 369km. The ruins sit 12km outside the modern town, so budget a songthaew or a rented bicycle at the far end before calling the journey done.

Sukhothai → Ayutthaya: Chaining the two ruin sites in one direction saves a Bangkok backtrack, but check the departure the day before: the Ayutthaya stop is a roadside one, not a terminal.

Both ends of the trip

Bangkok

The arrival point for most trips and the hub every rail and bus line runs back to.

Airport BKK / DMK: Two airports 50km apart on opposite sides of the city; a domestic connection between them needs 3 hours, not 1.

Bangkok is driest Nov–Apr and wettest May–Oct on its own monthly rain-day normals.

Ayutthaya

UNESCO temple ruins 71km north of Bangkok — the country's most-done day trip.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Bangkok to Ayutthaya?

1h–1h30 on the quickest option we hold — minivan with Minivans from opposite Mo Chit. The slowest of the 3 options here takes 12h35–18h20, so the spread between them is about 14h13. Times are for the scheduled leg and exclude the transfer at either end.

How much is Bangkok to Ayutthaya?

From ฿15–฿20 one way by day train, checked 7 September 2026. The quickest option costs ฿60–฿100 and saves about 23min, so the gap between them is ฿45 against roughly that much time. That band comes from a dated route listing rather than a published tariff, so treat it as indicative.

What is the cheapest way from Bangkok to Ayutthaya?

Day train at ฿15–฿20, run by State Railway of Thailand (ordinary services). It takes 1h15–2h against the quickest option's 1h–1h30, and runs multiple ordinary departures a day.

Where does the Bangkok to Ayutthaya service leave from, and how often does it run?

Faster than the ordinary train and about four times the price, which on this leg still means under ฿100. Luggage space is the trade — a full-size case is a problem. Through the day, filling as they go rather than to a timetable.

Going the other way, or further

The return trip is on the Ayutthaya to Bangkok page — fares are the same in both directions on almost every leg here, but the timetables are not. To string this hop into a longer trip with a pace check, use the route planner, and see the island comparison for which coast is dry in the month you are travelling.

The Bangkok end of this leg starts at a station or a terminal rather than a hotel door: getting around Bangkok has the BTS, MRT and boat fares for reaching Hua Lamphong, Krung Thep Aphiwat and the two bus terminals, and airport to city covers the Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang runs if the leg is a flight.
