Same option twice: on this pair the quickest way is also the cheapest, which is rarer than it sounds — it usually means one operator has the route to itself.

Booking notes

Day train · 8h40–9h40 · ฿428

Air-conditioned 2nd class seats, about 9 hours in daylight. Cheaper than a sleeper but it costs a full day rather than a night.

Bus · 9h–11h · ฿500–฿900

VIP coaches sit at the top of the band. The overnight bus and the overnight train arrive within an hour or two of each other; the train has the better bed and the bus the better price.

Sleeper train · 11h–13h · ฿768–฿868

Band shown is a 2nd class air-conditioned sleeper; 1st class runs ฿1,246–1,446. The train sets down at Phunphin, 13km outside Surat Thani town, where the island bus-and-ferry connections meet it.

Flight + Ferry · 3h15–5h30 · ฿2,200–฿6,850

Bangkok → Koh Samui: Bangkok Airways owns Samui airport and runs a near-monopoly on the route, so the floor here sits where other islands' ceilings do. Flying to Surat Thani and continuing by bus and boat is the standard way around it.

Koh Samui → Surat Thani: ฿200 is Raja's own published passenger fare on the Donsak–Lipa Noi crossing, one of the few numbers on this page that comes straight off an operator's board. Donsak pier is 60–90 minutes by road from Surat Thani town.

Flight + Bus · 5h05–8h25 · ฿1,100–฿3,600

Bangkok → Krabi & Ao Nang: Usually a little cheaper than Phuket and much closer to Ao Nang, Railay and the Lanta and Phi Phi piers. If the Andaman islands are the plan rather than Patong, this is the better arrival.

Krabi & Ao Nang → Surat Thani: The overland link between the Gulf and Andaman coasts. Sold as part of most Samui-to-Krabi combined tickets rather than bought on its own.

Bus + ferry (one ticket) + Ferry · 12h15–17h10 · ฿800–฿1,350

Bangkok → Koh Samui: Standard coaches sit at ฿600–800 and VIP at ฿900–1,100, both including the Donsak ferry. One ticket means one company owns the connection — worth more on this route than the ฿100 difference between operators.

Koh Samui → Surat Thani: ฿200 is Raja's own published passenger fare on the Donsak–Lipa Noi crossing, one of the few numbers on this page that comes straight off an operator's board. Donsak pier is 60–90 minutes by road from Surat Thani town.

Bus + ferry (one ticket) + Speedboat / catamaran · 15h45–20h10 · ฿1,650–฿2,450

Bangkok → Koh Tao: The bus runs overnight to Chumphon and hands over to the 08:00 catamaran, landing on Koh Tao around 10:30 — 12 to 13 hours door to door. Lomprayah's own promoted fare for the combination was ฿850 in May 2026; the top of the band covers VIP coach seats and high season.

Koh Tao → Surat Thani: Nothing runs Surat Thani to Koh Tao directly — the boat calls at Phangan or Samui on the way, which is why the time band is so wide. Coming from Bangkok, Chumphon is the shorter door.

Bus + ferry (one ticket) + Ferry · 16h15–20h15 · ฿1,170–฿1,750

Bangkok → Koh Phangan: Two routings sell under the same name: the Chumphon catamaran down through Koh Tao, and the Surat Thani coach across to Donsak. The Chumphon version is faster and pricier; check which one the ticket actually is.

Koh Phangan → Surat Thani: ฿270 is Raja's published passenger fare for the Donsak–Thong Sala crossing. Around the Full Moon these sailings fill; book the day before rather than at the pier.

Both ends of the trip

Bangkok

The arrival point for most trips and the hub every rail and bus line runs back to.

Airport BKK / DMK: Two airports 50km apart on opposite sides of the city; a domestic connection between them needs 3 hours, not 1.

Bangkok is driest Nov–Apr and wettest May–Oct on its own monthly rain-day normals.

Surat Thani

Not a destination — the mainland interchange every Gulf island ticket routes through.

Airport URT: The cheap way into the Gulf islands: low-cost flight here, then a bus-and-ferry combination to the pier.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Bangkok to Surat Thani?

8h40–9h40 on the quickest option we hold — day train with State Railway of Thailand (trains 40/41 diesel railcar). The slowest of the 8 options here takes 16h15–20h15, so the spread between them is about 9h05. Times are for the scheduled leg and exclude the transfer at either end.

How much is Bangkok to Surat Thani?

From ฿428 one way by day train, checked 7 September 2026 — and on this pair that is also the quickest way, so there is nothing to trade off. The dearest of the 8 options here runs to ฿2,200–฿6,850. That band comes from a dated route listing rather than a published tariff, so treat it as indicative.

What else runs between Bangkok and Surat Thani?

7 other options. The next one after day train with State Railway of Thailand (trains 40/41 diesel railcar) is bus with Sombat Tour at ฿500–฿900 and 9h–11h — dearer and slower. All of them are in the table above with their operators and frequency.

Where does the Bangkok to Surat Thani service leave from, and how often does it run?

Air-conditioned 2nd class seats, about 9 hours in daylight. Cheaper than a sleeper but it costs a full day rather than a night. Daily.

Going the other way, or further

The return trip is on the Surat Thani to Bangkok page — fares are the same in both directions on almost every leg here, but the timetables are not. To string this hop into a longer trip with a pace check, use the route planner, and see the island comparison for which coast is dry in the month you are travelling.

The Bangkok end of this leg starts at a station or a terminal rather than a hotel door: getting around Bangkok has the BTS, MRT and boat fares for reaching Hua Lamphong, Krung Thep Aphiwat and the two bus terminals, and airport to city covers the Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang runs if the leg is a flight.
