Booking notes

Flight · 55min–1h10 · ฿2,500–฿5,500

The only quick way to swap coasts. Everything else — coach across the peninsula, or a flight via Bangkok — costs a day or a connection.

Flight + Flight · 3h10–5h30 · ฿2,900–฿10,100

Koh Samui → Bangkok: Bangkok Airways owns Samui airport and runs a near-monopoly on the route, so the floor here sits where other islands' ceilings do. Flying to Surat Thani and continuing by bus and boat is the standard way around it.

Bangkok → Phuket: The most competitive domestic route in the country, which is why the floor sits under ฿1,000 outside holidays. Phuket airport is 32km north of Patong — budget an hour and ฿200–800 for that transfer on top.

Flight + Flight · 4h35–7h05 · ฿4,500–฿11,100

Koh Samui → Chiang Mai: Samui airport is privately owned and Bangkok Airways runs almost all of it, which is why this leg costs more than a longer flight to Phuket. Flying to Surat Thani and taking the boat is routinely half the price.

Chiang Mai → Phuket: Direct flights exist but are thin — a connection through Bangkok can be cheaper and is often only an hour longer overall. Check both before assuming direct wins.

Bus + ferry (one ticket) + Minivan · 8h51–13h10 · ฿980–฿2,000

Koh Samui → Khao Sok: Minivan to Donsak, then the Samui ferry. Booked as one ticket in Khao Sok village; there is no walk-up alternative if it's missed.

Khao Sok → Phuket: The bottom of the band is a shared van, the top a private car. Most Khao Sok bookings include the transfer to the lake pier as a separate morning leg — that isn't in this fare.

Bus + ferry (one ticket) + Bus · 10h15–15h20 · ฿1,100–฿2,050

Koh Samui → Krabi & Ao Nang: Ferry to Donsak, coach across the peninsula, arrive Krabi in the late afternoon. It's the standard way to swap coasts without flying, and it eats a full day whichever operator sells it.

Krabi & Ao Nang → Phuket: 86km by road around the bay. The bus is the one most people take; the ferry between the two takes five hours and stops at Phi Phi, so it's a sightseeing route rather than a transfer.

Bus + ferry (one ticket) + Minivan · 10h25–14h50 · ฿1,040–฿1,750

Koh Samui → Krabi & Ao Nang: Ferry to Donsak, coach across the peninsula, arrive Krabi in the late afternoon. It's the standard way to swap coasts without flying, and it eats a full day whichever operator sells it.

Krabi & Ao Nang → Phuket: Cheaper than the bus and it will pick up at hotels and the airport. The trade is the usual one: nine people, one aisle, no luggage hold.

Bus + ferry (one ticket) + Bus · 22h45–29h30 · ฿1,300–฿2,500

Koh Samui → Bangkok: Standard coaches sit at ฿600–800 and VIP at ฿900–1,100, both including the Donsak ferry. One ticket means one company owns the connection — worth more on this route than the ฿100 difference between operators.

Bangkok → Phuket: Twelve to fourteen hours for a fare that a flight booked in advance regularly beats. It exists, it's cheap in the last-minute case, and almost nobody should choose it over the plane.

Both ends of the trip

Koh Samui

The Gulf's biggest island and the only one with its own airport.

Airport USM: Privately owned and served almost entirely by Bangkok Airways, which is why fares here sit well above the low-cost market.

Koh Samui is driest Feb–Aug and wettest Sep–Jan on its own monthly rain-day normals.

Phuket

Connected to the mainland by bridge, so it works as an airport hub as much as a beach.

Airport HKT: The Andaman's main gateway, with the widest low-cost domestic and regional network in the south.

Phuket is driest Nov–Apr and wettest May–Oct on its own monthly rain-day normals.
