Where to stay in Bangkok on a budget

Share

A dorm bed in Bangkok ran ฿155–571 a night across the Hostelworld listings we checked on 7 September 2026, and the spread between districts is smaller than the spread between hostels. What changes with the district is the second cost: a ฿300 room 12 km east of Siam adds two rail fares and an hour a day to every sightseeing plan. The ranking below takes the cheapest tier seriously but still weights distance to the Grand Palace, because that is where the money you saved goes.

The room is one line of the trip. What a trip to Bangkok costs puts a nightly band next to food and transport for a whole week, and street food: what to order is where the eating half of that figure comes from.

The five that score highest, and why

  1. 1

    Khao San

    score 78/100฿200–600 / night
    • 1.2 km from the Grand Palace, 4.3 km from Siam (straight line).
    • Hostel / budget rooms run ฿200–600 a night (indicative, 7 September 2026).
    • No hotel listed here yet — 11 businesses of any kind in our Khao San rows.

The catch: The bars on Khao San and Rambuttri run loud until 02:00, and a street-facing room here is a bad night's sleep at any price.

  2. 2

    Thonburi

    score 77/100฿300–700 / night
    • 3.3 km from the Grand Palace, 5.9 km from Siam (straight line).
    • Hostel / budget rooms run ฿300–700 a night (indicative, 7 September 2026).
    • 7 hotels listed, 4 rated, averaging 3.9 out of 5.

The catch: The west bank is spread thin, and an address that looks close to Wat Arun on a map is often a 20-minute walk from the nearest pier — check that walk before booking.

  3. 3

    Rattanakosin (Old City)

    score 75/100฿300–700 / night
    • 0.4 km from the Grand Palace, 4.5 km from Siam (straight line).
    • Hostel / budget rooms run ฿300–700 a night (indicative, 7 September 2026).
    • No hotel listed here yet — 7 businesses of any kind in our Rattanakosin (Old City) rows.

The catch: The Old City empties after dark — most kitchens close by 21:00, and an evening in Sukhumvit or Silom means 30–40 minutes each way.

  4. 4

    Ratchathewi & Pratunam

    score 74/100฿300–700 / night
    • 5.3 km from the Grand Palace, 1 km from Siam (straight line).
    • Hostel / budget rooms run ฿300–700 a night (indicative, 7 September 2026).
    • 5 hotels listed, 5 rated, averaging 4.3 out of 5.

The catch: Pratunam's pavements are wholesale clothing stalls from morning until late, so walking anywhere with a suitcase takes twice as long as the map suggests.

  5. 5

    Yaowarat (Chinatown)

    score 72/100฿300–700 / night
    • 2.2 km from the Grand Palace, 2.8 km from Siam (straight line).
    • Hostel / budget rooms run ฿300–700 a night (indicative, 7 September 2026).
    • No hotel listed here yet — 4 businesses of any kind in our Yaowarat (Chinatown) rows.

The catch: The street food that fills Yaowarat Road does not start until about 18:00, and the traffic and stall generators keep going with it past midnight.

Frequently asked questions

Which Bangkok district is best on a budget?

Khao San scores highest here (78 out of 100), ahead of Thonburi on 77 and Rattanakosin (Old City) on 75. The scoring weights budget tier, no vibe filter, first visit, sights as the priority. Khao San is 1.2 km from the Grand Palace and 4.3 km from Siam, and its hostel / budget rooms run ฿200–600 a night.

What does a room in these five districts cost?

At the hostel / budget tier they run from ฿200–600 in Khao San up to ฿300–700 in Thonburi. Those are mid-week nights outside the December–February high season, checked 7 September 2026 — Songkran and the New Year week run 40% to 100% above them.

How many hotels do you list in these districts?

12 across 2 of the five, 9 of them rated and averaging 4.1 out of 5. Site-wide we list 38 hotels in 12 of 22 Bangkok districts, so a district with none here means we have not imported it yet, not that it has no hotels.

What is the closest of these five to the Grand Palace?

Rattanakosin (Old City), 0.4 km in a straight line (4.5 km from Siam, 21.6 km from Don Mueang). Bangkok traffic makes the real journey longer than the distance suggests, and at rush hour much longer. Getting in and out: MRT Blue Line at Sanam Chai for Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, plus Chao Phraya Express boat stops at Tha Tien and Tha Chang.

What do these five districts have to eat and drink?

42 places to eat and 12 bars and clubs across the five, counted from our own listings. Khao San alone holds 3 of the first number and 2 of the second.
